What Fits your Recumbent Bike, Trike, or Velomobile?

Electric Mountain Drive™, Type 2

Our Electric Mountain Drive, Type 2 fits most tadpole (1 wheel in back, 2 in front) trikes and many short wheelbase recumbents (SWB recumbents have the front wheel behind the bottom bracket). Refer to the photo on the right to see how the EMtnD2 fits on a trike or bike. Here's the summary of what's required:

• 68mm English threaded (1.37" x 24 TPI) bottom bracket.
• 7 inches of clearance below the frame at a point 7.5 inches behind the bottom bracket.

It uses the same bottom bracket attachment as our Type 1 Electric Mountain Drive for upright bikes. You can find the details of how to measure your bottom bracket here. The only difference is that since the Type 2 is below and behind the bottom bracket, and between the wheels on a tadpole trike, there is no wheel clearance issue. If you want to install a Type 2 on an SWB recumbent bike, you'll need 7 inches (175mm) of vertical clearance at a point 7.5 (190mm) inches behind the center of the bottom bracket. If your bike has front suspension, allow this much clearance when the suspension is fully compressed.

Electric Mid Drive™

Custom Mid Drive Units

Many of the EMD variants that we used to make as kits are now part of our custom department. These are kits that sold in such low volume that it was uneconomic for us to keep them updated to reflect minor year to year variations in the various bikes. There are also many other bikes we can fit by mixing and matching from out parts bin but, again, it's not economic to package all of the combinations as individual kits. Finally we can, and do all of the time, make custom parts to adapt our systems to many unusual bikes or trikes. So check out our custom department and give us a call. The cost of a custom conversion is often only slightly more than a standard kit and usually less than what we used to charge for the frame adapter for these more unusual kits.

Velomobiles
Velomobiles are all part of our custom department except for those than can use a standard Electric Mountain Drive, Type 2 above. We have an Electric Mountain Drive, Type 4 that's designed for Velomobiles, but it requires a small amount of custom work to adapt it to a given velo.

EMD Frame Adapters

Frame Adapters customize an Electric Mid-Drive unit to fit a particular recumbent bike. A Frame Adapter is not just mounting brackets but rather a carefully engineered solution that adapts the EMD to a particular bike. The Frame adapter alters the appearance of the EMD to match the bike, contains custom CNC machined mounting pieces, and, where necessary, parts to route the chain line around obstacles on the bicycle frame. Frame adapters also include all instructions needed to install an EMD Unit on a particular bike. Now included in the price of our EMD kits.
